Disneyland Dilemma January 3, 2003

Miss Monica visits Disneyland.

Good: Sulky, tattooed teens babysitting children at the tea cup ride. Overheard comment about Disneyland Japan: It’s a Small World in Japanese? Horrible. Requires heroin. Nutcracker soldier marching band at 8pm in the evening parade. Fireworks at 9pm. “Snow” on Main Street at 9:30pm, made not of frozen water but from rapidly disolving, non-sticky, non-slippery, bland tasting soap bubbles. Smelled like the water in a Las Vegas hotel swimming pool — chlorine and roses — The boys in the lab worked extra hard on that formula…

Bad: Constant “It’s a Small World / Christmas Carol” medley. A huge crowd being mass-merchandized to. Screaming children. Screaming adults. Sulky, tattooed teens babysitting children at the tea cup ride. Threats of perhaps we should just go home, then….

Miss Monica asks her own question: If Disneyland is the “happiest place on earth,” then why were they sold out of “Grumpy” hats?
